Small and Rapid Research (SRR) Grants

The Australia-Indonesia Centre has established a grant scheme within the Partnership for Australia-Indonesia Research (PAIR) program.

The scheme will fund Small and Rapid Research (SRR) Projects with up to AUD 20,000 each. Total funding available is AUD 160,000. SRR Projects must be completed in 2020.

As the COVID-19 pandemic has spread, it has disrupted economies, jobs, education and health systems across the globe. The SRR Grants scheme provides a mechanism to address pressing challenges brought about by the impact of COVID-19 in Indonesia by rapidly bringing together relevant expertise. The SRR Grants will establish research teams of Indonesians and Australians from both countries’ top universities to collaborate on projects. The outcomes of the SRR Grants will provide the policy community with timely access to the best available evidence and information and inform the Australia-Indonesia Centre’s interactions and collaboration with policy bodies related to COVID-19. The results of the SRR Grants scheme will demonstrate the critical role of research in responding to the pandemic and contribute new ideas to the COVID-19 development response.

Objective: To provide analysis which seeks to inform the policy community about the opportunities to address the impact of COVID-19 in Indonesia.

Areas of focus:

The grants focus on the following three areas:

1. COVID-19, people and health – explore issues relating to health and wellbeing; national and provincial public health policy responses (includes data [collection, sharing and dissemination] and modelling, behavioural change and communication strategies); already marginalised and vulnerable communities, especially women, girls and people with disabilities.
2. COVID-19, people and connectivity – with a focus on the pandemic’s impact on connectivity and supply chains, including issues relating to data, digital technologies, transport, and logistics.
3. COVID-19, people and economic recovery – exploring issues and responses in areas such as the emergence of the “new poor”, data, digital economy, young people, gender inequality, and already marginalised and vulnerable communities.

Unlike other activities in the PAIR program, the SRR Grants are not limited to South Sulawesi. Projects may focus on any part of Indonesia, and can address challenges at national, provincial, district or village level.

Eligibility: The SRR projects are open to researchers from all disciplines based at one of the eleven AIC partner universities. Each SRR project must be co-led by two project co-leaders: one based at an AIC Australian partner university and one based at an AIC Indonesian partner university.

Instructions for application submission: Project applications must be submitted to the AIC by the closing date via pair@australiaindonesiacentre.org by an AIC Australian partner university Research Office. Applications must satisfy all the requirements set out in the SRR Grant Funding Guidelines.
