The health system in Indonesia, particularly in South Sulawesi, faced significant challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic due to inadequate implementation of health information systems (HIS).

These systems were initially set up in an ad-hoc manner, leading to poor data connectivity and quality, hindering effective disease surveillance and essential health services.

Moreover, South Sulawesi’s diverse geography, encompassing remote islands, coastal areas and mountains, further complicated the deployment and use of centralised HIS. This situation underscored a critical need for a comprehensive digital transformation in the health sector to support post-pandemic recovery and future health challenges.

This study, Navigating the future of healthcare: digital strategies for post-pandemic recovery in South Sulawesi, presents a comprehensive analysis of the adoption and impact of Health Information Systems (HIS) in the region.

The South Sulawesi government could boost public awareness and knowledge about digital health applications via a number of recommended actions.

1. Identify specific groups within the community that the health information system should focus on. These should include patients, patients’ families, and the general public.

2. Deliver clear, concise messages that highlight the benefits of digital health applications. Use multiple communication channels to reach the target audience, such as social media, mass media, community events and testimonials.
